Spread the Love

Happy Valentine’s Day! I don’t know if you are someone who loves this day, dreads it or just doesn’t care. I hope if you want to celebrate today you are. I personally love just about every holiday including this one! I love excuses to celebrate and I love to celebrate the love I have for the people in my life.

Yes, I know today is typically thought to be romantic or something you celebrate with a significant other and it absolutely can be if that is what you desire. But, for me and my family it has been about showing the people in your life that you love them and that is a tradition I hope to continue to teach my children.

Just yesterday, my sister stopped by my house on the way home from work and dropped off the most beautiful yellow tulips. Usually, my brother stops by the day of and surprises me with flowers, chocolate or some other treat to let me know he was thinking about me. My parents always got us valentine’s gifts (something super small like a candy bar and card) and still do. Unfortunately, the flu has hit my household this week so we do not have plans for today. We will likely do something over the weekend or next week when everyone is back on their feet.

If you do not like to celebrate or support this super commercialized holiday then that is your right. However, my personal opinion is that we all love to be thought of and celebrated! So why not today when your friends and family are seeing a majority of people getting flowers, presents, go on dates, and more on social media.

If not supporting big corporations is important to you then choose to show that person you care about them another way! For example, the hot water in my bathroom has been having a hard time getting warm since the weather got so cold and my husband has been telling me he could fix it but just hasn’t gotten around to doing so. Today he surprised me and turned up the water temperature so I can have a warmer shower! That small gesture that took only a couple minutes means the world to me! It was something that was bothering me every day and now I am looking forward to my shower tomorrow.

There is so much hate and unhappiness in this world. I challenge you to celebrate love today or this week. It could be writing a note to your neighbors or calling someone you haven’t spoken to in a while. Maybe you work today or are sick like my family and it just isn’t in the cards for today. I hope love isn’t something you can express only one day a year. This week, surprise a neighbor or sick friend (we know there are plenty of those this time of year) with dinner, cleaning their house, taking their trash cans down to the road. Small gestures go a long way. I also am a huge believer in what goes around, comes around. So, let’s spread the love!
